Richard Cornish

Director, Counter Fraud and Compliance

Richard was appointed as the DWP’s first Director of Counter Fraud and Compliance in January 2017, creating a new Directorate to bring together all counter fraud and error work including operational investigations, prevention activity, internal quality and policy/analysis for fraud, error and debt (FED). He is also the SRO for the FED Change Programme. Richard has a wide range of experience across the department. He was previously the department’s Devolution Director in the Strategy, Policy and Analysis Group and led on that group’s transformation programme. In late 2014 Richard was seconded into the Smith Commission supporting Lord Smith of Kelvin and the five Scottish political parties to reach agreement on a range of new powers for the Scottish Parliament. From 2011 Richard spent three years in operations as the Work Services Director for Scotland, overseeing Jobcentre Plus and the chair of DWP Scotland Network. Earlier roles in his career include time in Private Office and a range of operational roles in counter fraud and Jobcentre Plus. Richard also led on the launch of the Disability Confident campaign in 2013.
